In the early 2000s, my husband John accepted the pastorate of a BMA church on the North Eastern coast of New England. The next closest BMA church was in New York. With the distance and such severe winters, it was very difficult for the church to find someone willing to move so far away from family and friends. After much prayer, John and I felt the Lord leading us to accept the pastorate. It was good timing (God’s timing) for us: We were recent retirees and empty nesters.
During our time there, we had family visitors just three times. Being so far from the state of Texas, it was really good to visit with them, share our home with them, and worship with them. Those who visited were always interested in sightseeing trips to the lighthouses that were still intact.
But then we had visitors we weren’t expecting to be able to accept our invitation. When missionaries are on furlough, they let the BMA Missions office (now BMA Global) know of their availability to travel to BMA churches who extend invitations to the missionaries. With our BMA church being located further east in the contiguous United States than any other, invitations had gone out in the past, but none accepted until John invited Paul and Kerry Heuermann, missionaries to Africa. They didn’t hesitate but got in their car and drove all the way, just in time to be with us on World Missions Sunday.
It was very interesting to learn about the mission work they were doing in Ghana, Africa. We had never met them before but became good friends during their stay with us, and we are still in touch with them today. Their visit was really enjoyed and very much appreciated by the little BMA church that had never experienced such a special blessing as their presence on this special day.In the early 2000s, my husband John accepted the pastorate of a BMA church on the North Eastern coast of New England.
